Statement of Purpose

Since I was a boy, I have experienced vivid, outlandish dreams. Recurring themes and characters from these dreams have evolved into my own personal mythology. Landscapes and creatures I would visit and interact with on a nightly basis eventually found their way into my waking hours via the pencils and paper my schoolteachers provided.

Supplementing the influence of my dreams were the books my mother gave me to read—Maurice Sendak, Richard Scarry, Dr. Seuss, Shel Silverstein and Antoine de Saint- Exupéry. My father, a man of science, taught me about astronomy and paleontology, instilling in me a deep sense of wonder about our planet and the cosmos beyond. As I got older, I discovered Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel, and Salvador Dali, as well as the films of David Lynch and the stop-motion wizardry of Ray Harryhausen—all hugely influential.

Today my dreams continue to inspire my artwork. I let the images spill out initially without engaging in a heavy thought process. But as the painting develops, I strive to find the

perfect balance of humor and horror.

"I like the idea of transitioning or transforming from one thing into something else, whether it's literal or metaphorical. Crossing over between points in time and/or space. And a painting is a wonderful vehicle for crystallizing that temporary suspended state, with all its uncertainty, mystery and drama."
